On The Spot: With Michaela Hogarty, Floral Designer Days of May Florals.

We would not be able to create the amazing weddings that we do without our truly incredible network of vendors. From florists to photographers to stationers, we are lucky to know some of the most talented and creative pioneers in their industry. In this weekly segment, we’ll be featuring our partner vendors and introducing you to their story and the amazing work they do. This week, we’d like to introduce you to Michaela Hogarty, owner and lead floral designer at Days of Mays Florals. The New York City-based floral studio produces stunning arrangements, bouquets, and designs that have caught the eye of many a bride-to-be; Michaela’s work has also been featured in Vogue, Style Me Pretty, Green Wedding Shoes, Elle Decor, and Refinery29. That’s a pretty impressive resume for a company that was only founded in 2014! We caught up with the busy floral designer to chat inspiration, favorite flowers, and finding a signature design style. Check it out:

So tell us: how long have you been working with flowers?

Officially? About three years. But I've been around flowers and playing with them all my life. My grandfather and mother were amazing gardeners—every corner of the yard was carefully thought out and constantly being redesigned.

So what ultimately drew you to floral design?

I worked in the Interior Design world for a while. As the new, younger person, I was always doing the running around—which usually involved prepping flowers for interior shoots and keeping interior showrooms looking fresh. Ultimately, I realized I loved working with the flowers so much more than my actual jobs!

Where do you draw your daily inspiration?

New York retail shops. One of my favorite things to do is walk in and out of stores, just browsing. I can do this for hours by myself. The stores in New York have such great design, it's like going to a bunch of museums.

So how would you describe your design style?

I'm still figuring this out...but it's somewhere between romantic, messy, natural, and easy.

What led you to found Days of May Florals?

Working with flowers became my creative outlet, and I just didn't want to stop. I'm also a pretty introverted person so I love working solo. And aside from the creative aspect, I get a real high from running a business.

And what do you love most about what you do?

It's instant gratification. You dream something up, you buy the flowers…and there it is! I love being able to work with my hands, to feel and see the flowers together. I've never been good at doing anything creative on a computer, and I've just accepted that.

Do you have a favorite flower or season?

Every time I work with a new flower or variety, I'm like, "OMG this, this is my favorite!" So no, I can't seem to pick one—or a season, for that matter.

What wedding, to date, did you most enjoy being a part of—and why?

I did a wedding with a bride named Emily at Southward Estate in the Hudson Valley this past September, and I loved it so much. Emily was so open creatively and put her trust in me. At the end of the day that makes me feel more confident to make edits I feel strongly about. She was happy, I was happy, and everything turned out jaw-droppingly beautiful!
