Starting A Wedding Planning Company Was The Best Thing I Could Have Done!
I started my business back in 2013 and it has been filled with so many amazing moments, the best clients, ups and downs (a lot of it, lol) but most of all it has brought me joy.
I became a planner purely by accident. Little did I know I would get this far in the game!
When I first started my business, I didn't think I would ever get this far, I honestly didn't. When I came to New York as a young 20 something from Cape Town, South Africa with nothing but stars and bright lights in my eyes, I didn't think I was going to make it here and become an event planner, but I went against the grain and followed my vision which was to be successful in anything I do and make my family proud, especially my mom.
As the years went on and now being at the 4 and half year mark with Björn & Company, things feel different to me, life feels different, my career feels different, I feel different and with all the bumps in the road, I do feel stronger about where I am in my career. What I learned early on in my career was tougher skin was going to be needed to survive in this industry and also adapting to other professionals and their personalities, because I was going to work with so many different ones.
As planners, we strive to make our clients happy, bend over backward for them and would do anything to make them happy, because we know what is expected of us and won't settle for anything but the best for them.
Four years into it and I'm still learning new things every day, but I know if I wanted to succeed, I needed to quit a few things, because if I don't, my career might not last long! (I may be a little dramatic there, but you know what I mean!)
- Quit doubting myself & wondering if I'm good enough.
- Quit trying to please everybody, because I ultimately won't.
- Quit thinking everyone is going to like me because they won't
- Quit being scared and make full use of the opportunities that have been presented in front of me.
- Quit not reaching my full potential and elevate my business to the next level.
- Quit not seeing what I have already achieved and be proud of myself.
- Quit not letting other event planners in.
- Quit making excuses and spend more time with my family and friends.
- Quit feeling like I'm alone because, in reality, I am not.
Remember, people are watching our every move. We have to be so careful what we put out social media and how we portrait ourselves in public because how you act in public will tell a potential client everything about you and will be the deciding factor whether they'll hire you or not. Trust me, I had to learn the hard way.
All the ups and downs, it really is part of the process. Business may be good one year and the next it's not. Stay positive & passionate and keep doing what you're doing, it gets better! Remember, as a planner whether it be weddings or special events, our clients let us into their lives to help plan a celebration for a very special occasion. That is indeed a privilege and honor. I love what I do every day, I may not be perfect at times, but my job as a planner brings me so much joy & fulfillment.
What will you QUIT today?
I hope you have a fantastic week and thank you for stopping by!
